More about the beer
Table beer, or tafelbier, is Belgium’s everyday beer. It was brewed light enough to drink with meals, and was once even served in Belgian school canteens. The modern craft version keeps the low ABV but adds proper flavour and body. Oats in the mash give it a fuller, smoother mouthfeel than its strength suggests: all the taste, none of the regret.
More about the bird
The firecrest shares the title of the UK’s smallest bird with its cousin the goldcrest, at around 5 to 6 grams. Telling them apart is easy once you know the trick. The firecrest has a bold black eye-stripe, a bright white “eyebrow”, and a fiery orange crest that the male flares up when showing off. Only a small number breed in England, but more arrive in winter, often turning up in coastal scrub and woodland across the South West. Listen for a very high, thin, rising song. It’s tiny, but it’s a headliner.
But Why Firecrest?
Biff was surfing in Cornwall when he popped into the Finisterre shop and saw the Firecrest Range which described the bird as one of the uk's highest birds. That was it. Light bird, light beer that packs a punch. Nothing more to it!
