Goose Joose

Goose Joose: NEIPA, 6.0%

First Served - 12th July 2026

More about the beer
The New England IPA, or NEIPA, was born in Vermont in the early 2000s and swept the craft beer world. Oats and wheat create the hazy, pillowy body. Most of the hops go in during fermentation rather than the boil, which brings out huge juicy fruit with very little bitterness. NEIPAs are best fresh, so keep your cans in the fridge and don’t sit on them. This one is not built for the back of the cupboard.

More about the bird
Every October, dark-bellied brent geese fly roughly 4,000km from their breeding grounds in Arctic Siberia to spend the winter on UK estuaries, including the Taw-Torridge right on our doorstep. Look for them on the mudflats around Braunton Marsh and Isley Marsh from autumn to spring. They’re small, about the size of a big duck, and live mostly on eelgrass. You’ll hear them before you see them: a low, chattering “rronk” from the whole flock. Their breeding success in the Arctic rises and falls with the lemming population, because when lemmings are scarce, foxes go for goose eggs instead. Nature is wild.

But Why Goose Joose?
You can thank one of our local customers, Jackie - who came up with the name when we launched the NEIPA in early 2026. The name had a ring to it and knew people would get GOOSED after 3 pints!
